As I prepare to find a sketchy website to watch Jake Paul take on Anderson Silva, it made me think about how big the sport of boxing use to be!
You ever heard of the saying “it’s a copy cat league”? That implies when something successful happens for one group, their competitors try and duplicate that. While I think that often applies, it’s not always true. If it was true damn it, professional boxing would have copied the UFC business model years ago!
While I’m not a big UFC/MMA fan YET, I do have to acknowledge the incredible job Dana White, president of the UFC has done. White has helped grow the business from $2 million to roughly $5 billion.
To me, the biggest reason to why the UFC has become so entertaining is because the fans get the fights they want, when they want them! Boxing, please copy that!
The fans get those fights because they have one president to make the fights, Unlike boxing where seemingly every fighter has a promoter. These promoters fight with one another about everything! And yes everything as in money! They’re willing to hold up fights for years if they can’t get what they want. And then they have the audacity to roll out the fight we wanted 5+ years after both boxers are pass their primes. I’m starting to think that’s going to happen to Terrence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr.
The same is happening with the light weight division. There are a legit 7-9 light weights who would make good to great fights. Shoutout to Newark native, Shakur Stevenson.
I’ll wrap this up with saying, I grew up watching boxing with my family and still love it. They have a few issues from having too many belts and several corrupt judges, but the biggest problem is the fact that they don’t have one person to make the fights. This president could even do a tournament! People love tournaments! Just make sure the champ fights the number one contender ASAP. It’s simple. Give the fans what they want.
So you ask, who is going to save boxing? Me! That’s who. Big Neef for president of boxing.
Here’s a clip of Stephen A Smith losing his mind over this very thing.
