The final day of 2026 World Baseball Classic pool play brought a mix of drama, blowouts, and major implications for the knockout stage. With quarterfinal spots on the line, several teams entered Tuesday needing wins to secure their place in the tournament’s final eight.
By the end of the night, the picture became much clearer as several contenders officially locked in their spots while others saw their tournament hopes disappear.
Italy Stays Perfect, Dominates Mexico
One of the biggest statements of the day came in Pool B, where Italy continued its incredible run through the tournament.
Italy entered the game undefeated and backed it up with another dominant performance, beating Mexico 9–1. The win kept Italy perfect in pool play and cemented them as one of the surprise stories of the entire tournament.
With the victory, Italy finished 4–0 in pool play, finishing atop Pool B and advancing to the quarterfinals.
Mexico, which entered the game still battling for position, finished pool play 2–2 and saw its tournament hopes collapse after the loss.
Italy’s deep pitching staff and timely offense have been the biggest surprises of the tournament so far.

Dominican Republic Tops Venezuela in Heavyweight Matchup
The other major game of the day featured two undefeated teams facing off in Pool D.
Both the Dominican Republic and Venezuela entered the matchup 4–0, already having secured their spots in the quarterfinals.
Still, the game carried significant importance as both teams wanted momentum heading into the knockout stage.
The Dominican Republic came out on top with a 7–5 victory, powered by timely hitting and another strong performance from their loaded lineup. The DR team had a little hiccup in the 9th inning as they allowed a few walks, sac fly and a throwing error on what couldve been a double play. But they hold off to secure the win.
Despite the loss, Venezuela still advances as the runner-up in Pool D, while the Dominican Republic takes the top seed from the pool.

Canada Clinches Pool A
In Pool A, Canada secured the top spot after finishing pool play with a 3–1 record, edging out Puerto Rico, who also finished 3–1 but lost the tiebreaker.
Puerto Rico still advances as the pool runner-up, while Cuba (2–2) narrowly missed out on the knockout stage.
Canada’s advancement marks one of the more impressive runs of the tournament so far, as the Canadians quietly navigated a competitive pool to claim the top spot.

Japan Dominates Pool C
Over in Tokyo, Japan once again looked like the class of the tournament.
The defending champions finished pool play a perfect 4–0, cruising through Pool C and locking up the number one seed.
South Korea grabbed the second quarterfinal spot in the pool after winning a complicated tiebreaker involving multiple teams finishing 2–2.
Japan’s dominance once again makes them one of the clear favorites to win the entire tournament.

The Tournament Now Becomes Must-Watch
The World Baseball Classic is always fun during pool play, but the real magic begins once the tournament shifts to single-elimination baseball.
One bad inning can end a championship run.
And with heavyweights like Japan, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and the United States all still alive, the road to the WBC title is about to get very interesting.
The quarterfinals now set the stage for what could be one of the most exciting finishes the tournament has ever seen.
