USA vs Dominican Republic: The WBC Semifinal We’ve All Been Waiting For

Tonight’s World Baseball Classic semifinal between Team USA and the Dominican Republic is exactly the type of matchup international baseball fans dream about.

Superstars everywhere. Electric crowds. Chains, bat flips, and moonshot home runs.

And apparently a lot of people have been asking me the same question today:

“Who are you rooting for tonight?”

And honestly… I think that question is a little dramatic.

Let me make something very clear.

I am a diehard American.

Few things I love more than America.

And one of those things… is bad bitches.

Now listen. Just because I’ve been known to wear a Dominican Republic flag bandana while playing men’s league softball, or rock a 2023 Dominican Republic WBC hat while working construction, does not mean I’m rooting for them tonight.

Relax.

I simply appreciate good baseball.

Why Dominican Baseball Is So Fun to Watch

If you’re a real baseball fan — what I like to call an elite ball knower — you understand why the Dominican team is so entertaining.

They bring everything that makes baseball fun.

  • Slow home run trots

  • Chains the size of boat anchors

  • Dugout celebrations

  • Crowds that sound like a World Cup stadium

Dominican baseball is loud, emotional, and unapologetically fun.

Every swing feels like a moment.

Every game feels like October.

And the Dominican fanbase might honestly be the most passionate crowd in international baseball.

But make no mistake about it…

I’m Riding With Team USA Tonight

At the end of the day, I’m rolling with Team USA.

And tonight the Americans have the ultimate weapon on the mound. Paul Skenes.

Skenes has already been one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball since arriving in the majors, and his numbers against Dominican hitters have been absolutely ridiculous.

The guy throws:

  • 100+ mph fastballs

  • splitters that disappear

  • sliders that look illegal

He’s basically baseball’s version of a Marvel super soldier.

If Team USA is going to take down the most explosive lineup in the tournament, Skenes setting the tone early is the key.

USA Makes the Right Lineup Adjustments

Team USA manager Mark DeRosa also made two lineup moves that I think are absolutely perfect for tonight’s matchup.

Gunnar Henderson Replaces Alex Bregman

Bregman has been struggling at the plate during the tournament, and Henderson gives the lineup more:

  • power

  • athleticism

  • left-handed balance

It’s a bold move, but it makes sense.

Will Smith Behind the Plate

Will Smith getting the start at catcher over Cal Raleigh is another good adjustment.

Smith is one of the best offensive catchers in baseball, and he handles elite pitching staffs extremely well.

With Skenes on the mound, having a catcher who can control the tempo of the game is huge.

The Key to Winning: Bryce Harper

But if Team USA is going to win this game, it comes down to one thing.

Bryce Harper needs to wake up.

Harper hasn’t been his usual MVP-level self at the plate during the tournament.

And that’s a problem.

Because when Harper is locked in, it changes the entire dynamic of the lineup.

If Harper starts getting on base, it sets the table for the two guys behind him.

Judge and Schwarber Could Break This Game Open

The biggest nightmare scenario for opposing pitchers?

Aaron Judge and Kyle Schwarber hitting with runners on base.

Those two can change a game with one swing.

And if Harper starts getting on base ahead of them, the Dominican pitching staff could find themselves in serious trouble.

All it takes is one mistake pitch.

And suddenly the game is 3-0.

The Ultimate Baseball Culture Clash

What makes this game so fun is that it’s also a clash of baseball styles.

Team USA

  • Power pitching

  • Structured lineup

  • Calm, professional approach

Dominican Republic

  • Energy

  • flair

  • explosive offense

  • nonstop emotion

It’s basically baseball’s version of precision vs chaos.

And honestly?

That’s exactly why the World Baseball Classic works.

One Game From the Final

The stakes couldn’t be higher.

The winner of tonight’s game moves on to the WBC Championship Game.

For the United States, it’s a chance to continue building international dominance.

For the Dominican Republic, it’s another opportunity to prove they might be the most electric baseball country on the planet.

But tonight?

I’m rolling with the stars and stripes.

Paul Skenes on the mound.

Judge and Schwarber ready to launch baseballs into orbit.

And hopefully Bryce Harper remembering he’s Bryce Harper.

It’s going to be a hell of a game.
