The Round of 32 is officially in the books, and I have to say this tournament has completely delivered. With today being the Fourth of July, it makes it even sweeter knowing Team USA is still dancing. The Americans survived the opening knockout round and now get one of their biggest tests yet when they square off against Belgium on Monday night. There isn't a better time for this country to rally behind soccer than right now. Whether you've watched every match or you're just jumping on the bandwagon because it's the World Cup, this is exactly what makes this tournament special. Every game feels like it matters, and now the pressure only gets bigger.
Last night's Argentina-Cape Verde match was arguably the game of the tournament so far. If you're someone who still thinks soccer is boring, that's the match I'd tell you to watch. Cape Verde, one of the biggest Cinderella stories of this World Cup, pushed the defending champions to the absolute limit in an instant classic. Lionel Messi was once again pulling the strings all night. He scored Argentina's opening goal and continuously terrorized the Cape Verde defense with dangerous set pieces, including the late corner that ultimately led to the winning goal in extra time. Cape Verde refused to quit, answering Argentina twice before finally falling 3-2 after 120 unforgettable minutes. They may be heading home, but they earned the respect of soccer fans around the world.
As for my GOAT, Cristiano Ronaldo finally checked off one box that critics have loved bringing up for years. Portugal advanced thanks to Ronaldo scoring his first-ever goal in a World Cup knockout match. It's one of the few accomplishments missing from his legendary résumé, and now that's gone too. Portugal survived Croatia, and if Ronaldo keeps finding the back of the net, they're going to be a dangerous team moving forward. I've said it before and I'll say it again—I don't care how old he is. You can never count Cristiano Ronaldo out when the lights are brightest.
The team that has impressed me the most, however, has been France. Kylian Mbappé has looked completely unstoppable from the opening whistle of this tournament. Every time he gets the ball, it feels like something dangerous is about to happen. His pace is unfair, his finishing has been clinical, and France looks every bit like the favorite to lift the trophy. Right now, I honestly don't know who beats them. Until someone proves otherwise, France is the team to beat.
Before this tournament started, I kept telling all my friends who don't watch soccer or follow the Premier League to keep an eye on Norway and Erling Haaland. Hopefully they're finally listening. Haaland is an absolute freak of nature. The guy looks like Super Buu from Dragon Ball Z running around against regular humans. He's bigger, faster and stronger than almost everyone on the field, yet somehow still moves like a winger. Norway has become one of the most entertaining teams left in the tournament, and Haaland continues to prove why he's one of the most feared strikers in the world.
Now the real fun begins. The Round of 16 is where every mistake becomes magnified, every goal matters that much more, and legends are made. We've already seen giants survive scares, underdogs refuse to back down, and superstars rise to the occasion. Hopefully Team USA can keep the magic alive against Belgium and give American soccer another unforgettable moment. If they can pull off the upset, this country might finally catch a serious case of World Cup fever. And honestly, that's good for the sport.
