NFL Week 1 Betting Preview: One Bet for Every Game on the First Sunday of the Season

The first real NFL Sunday of the year is finally here.

We already got Seattle beating New England on Wednesday and San Francisco stunning the Rams in Australia on Thursday, but today is when the season actually starts to feel normal again. Thirteen games, RedZone running all afternoon, fantasy teams immediately ruining friendships and everyone convincing themselves by about 2:15 that whatever happened in the preseason clearly meant everything.

For betting purposes, Week 1 is always dangerous. We have months of projections but almost no actual 2026 data. New coordinators, new quarterbacks, new offensive lines and new roles all make it very easy to convince yourself that you know more than you actually do. So rather than pretending every game is a five-star lock, I went through the entire Sunday slate and picked one wager I like in each matchup.

The lines below are based on the market Sunday morning and can obviously move before kickoff. CBS had Chicago around -3, Baltimore -3.5, Cincinnati -3.5, Detroit -7, Buffalo -1.5, Jacksonville -8.5, Minnesota -1.5, Philadelphia -5.5 and Dallas around -3, among the major numbers on the board.

Chicago Bears at Carolina Panthers — UNDER 47.5

Chicago and Carolina might actually be one of the more interesting early games because both organizations believe they finally have their quarterback situation figured out. Caleb Williams made a major jump under Ben Johnson last season, while Bryce Young helped get Carolina back to the playoffs. The market has reacted by pushing this total all the way into the upper 40s after opening closer to 44.5.

That move is exactly why I want the other side. Carolina enters the game with concerns along the offensive line, and Chicago was very good at creating turnovers last season. Week 1 offenses are also usually less polished than everyone expects after watching starters play almost no meaningful preseason football. I think both quarterbacks have good seasons, but that does not mean we need 50 points today.

My bet is Bears-Panthers UNDER 47.5.

I could see something like Chicago 24, Carolina 20 where both teams have moments offensively without the game ever turning into a shootout.

Baltimore Ravens at Indianapolis Colts — RAVENS -3.5

This is one of those lines where I am willing to lay the points because I trust one quarterback substantially more than the other.

Lamar Jackson is still Lamar Jackson. Baltimore also starts a new era under Jesse Minter, but the core of this roster remains good enough to compete immediately. Indianapolis has talent, but asking Daniel Jones and the Colts offense to keep pace with Baltimore for four quarters is something I need to actually see before I believe it.

The Ravens are laying roughly 3.5 on the road, with totals around 47.5 to 48 depending on the book.

I do not think Baltimore needs to win by 20. I just think if this is a one-score game late,

Lamar gives the Ravens a better chance of finding the touchdown that separates it.

My bet is Ravens -3.5.

Atlanta Falcons at Pittsburgh Steelers — UNDER 41

There are certain games where you look at the total and immediately understand what the sportsbooks are expecting.

This is one of them.

Pittsburgh enters another season planning to win with defense, field position and enough offense to avoid screwing everything up. Atlanta still has significant quarterback uncertainty, and Pittsburgh's defense at home is not exactly the matchup I want when trying to figure out a new offensive identity.

The spread has moved toward Pittsburgh, with some books reaching Steelers -6, while the total has settled around 41.

Instead of laying six points in Week 1, I would rather play the game script.

This feels like 20-16, 23-17 or something similarly disgusting where both fanbases spend half the afternoon complaining about play-calling.

My bet is Falcons-Steelers UNDER 41.

Cleveland Browns at Jacksonville Jaguars — UNDER 40

As a Browns fan, this is probably the game I have the least desire to bet and the most desire to watch.

Cleveland enters the season with Deshaun Watson starting, Shedeur Sanders behind him and an offensive line that has essentially been rebuilt. Reports going into Sunday indicate the Browns are expected to debut five new starters along the offensive line, which is not ideal when trying to establish offensive rhythm in Week 1.

Jacksonville is coming off a 13-win season and an AFC South title. Trevor Lawrence does not need to throw for 400 yards here. If Jacksonville is ahead, Liam Coen can lean on the run game, play defense and make Cleveland prove it can sustain drives.

The market has Jacksonville favored by roughly 8.5 with the total around 39.5 to 40.

I actually do not love laying that many points because Cleveland's defense can keep games ugly.

So let us embrace the ugliness.

My bet is Browns-Jaguars UNDER 40.

Something like Jacksonville 23, Cleveland 13 would surprise absolutely nobody.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Cincinnati Bengals — OVER 50.5

Now we finally get to have some fun.

This is the highest-scoring game I expect from the early slate.

Cincinnati is a 3.5-point favorite and the total is sitting around 50.5, the biggest number on Sunday's board.

Usually I am hesitant to bet a Week 1 over that high.

Not here.

Joe Burrow is healthy. Cincinnati should once again have one of the best passing offenses in football. Tampa Bay has Baker Mayfield and enough offensive talent to force Cincinnati to continue scoring instead of sitting on a lead.

I picked both of these teams to win their divisions before the season. I think Cincinnati ultimately wins the game, but Tampa's offense is good enough to keep Burrow throwing into the fourth quarter.

That is exactly what I want when betting an over.

My bet is Buccaneers-Bengals OVER 50.5.

Give me something like Cincinnati 31, Tampa Bay 27.

New York Jets at Tennessee Titans — UNDER 38.5

If Buccaneers-Bengals is the game I want when I am looking for points, this is the exact opposite.

The total is 38.5.

And I still want the under.

That tells you basically everything.

Tennessee is only a 1.5-point favorite, so the sportsbooks have almost no confidence separating these teams.

Both offenses enter the year with enormous questions. Neither team should be interested in putting its quarterback into obvious passing downs all afternoon. I expect a lot of running, field position, short throws and coaches treating a three-point lead like they are protecting the nuclear launch codes.

Could one defensive touchdown ruin this?

Absolutely.

That is the danger when betting a total this low.

But I cannot get myself to bet an over simply because 38.5 looks uncomfortable.

My bet is Jets-Titans UNDER 38.5.

First team to 20 might legitimately win.

New Orleans Saints at Detroit Lions — LIONS -7

I picked Detroit to win the NFC North, so I am not getting scared away from them because the line is a full touchdown.

Detroit had a disappointing 2025 season, but this remains one of the most talented offensive rosters in football. Jared Goff still has Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jahmyr Gibbs around him, and the Lions enter the season healthier than they were during much of last year's defensive collapse.

New Orleans is a team I need to see before I trust.

Detroit is favored by seven and this matchup carries a total around 49.5.

That tells me the market expects New Orleans to score enough to keep the game respectable.

I am not convinced.

At Ford Field, with Detroit trying to erase last season's disappointment immediately, this feels like a spot where the Lions come out aggressively.

My bet is Lions -7.

Detroit 31, New Orleans 20 feels about right.

Buffalo Bills at Houston Texans — BILLS -1.5

This might be the best game in the 1 p.m. window.

Buffalo is laying only 1.5 on the road, which is basically the market saying these teams are extremely close on a neutral field.

Houston's defense is legitimate. Will Anderson Jr. is expected to play despite appearing on the injury report, and the Texans have enough talent up front to make Josh Allen uncomfortable. Buffalo has a few defensive and depth injuries of its own entering the opener.

But when I get Josh Allen at less than a field goal, I generally need a very convincing argument to bet against him.

Houston can absolutely win this game.

C.J. Stroud can absolutely have a bounce-back season.

But until I see Houston's offensive line hold up consistently against elite competition again, I trust Allen more in the fourth quarter.

My bet is Bills -1.5.

This could easily be the best sweat of the afternoon.

Arizona Cardinals at Los Angeles Chargers — CHARGERS -9.5

Normally I hate laying almost double digits in Week 1.

The Chargers are the exception.

Los Angeles is favored around 9.5 after the number was north of 10 earlier in the week.

That is still a huge number.

I understand.

But I think there is a major gap between these rosters.

Justin Herbert is playing on a team that should have legitimate postseason expectations. Arizona enters the season much closer to the bottom of the NFC than the top.

The concern with laying 9.5 is obvious: Los Angeles gets ahead by 13, takes its foot off the gas and Arizona scores a garbage-time touchdown to ruin everyone's afternoon.

I am willing to risk it.

If the Chargers are who I think they are, this is the type of home game they need to control from the second quarter onward.

My bet is Chargers -9.5.

Green Bay Packers at Minnesota Vikings — VIKINGS -1.5

This might be my favorite bet of the late window.

Minnesota opened as an underdog and has since moved to a 1.5-point favorite, which is meaningful movement for a divisional Week 1 game.

The matchup explains why.

Green Bay enters without Micah Parsons, who is still recovering from his torn ACL, and without Josh Jacobs, who is suspended. The Packers are also carrying multiple offensive-line injury questions. Minnesota, meanwhile, gets its first look at Kyler Murray in Kevin O'Connell's offense.

That combination is enough for me.

I want Minnesota at home.

I want Justin Jefferson.

I want Brian Flores attacking a Green Bay offensive line that is not completely healthy.

And I only need to lay 1.5.

My bet is Vikings -1.5.

If Minnesota loses, I can live with the handicap. The situation is simply too favorable to pass up.

Miami Dolphins at Las Vegas Raiders — UNDER 40.5

This is another game where I am attacking uncertainty.

Las Vegas is around a three-point favorite with the total at 40.5.

The Raiders are beginning the Klint Kubiak era with Kirk Cousins starting while No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza waits behind him. The problem is that Cousins will be without Brock Bowers, who has already been ruled out with a knee injury. That removes the best receiving option from an offense that was already going to lean heavily on Ashton Jeanty and the running game.

Miami is rebuilding with the youngest roster in the league and 13 rookies, including several expected starters.

None of that screams shootout.

It screams September football where both teams are trying to figure out what they are.

My bet is Dolphins-Raiders UNDER 40.5.

Washington Commanders at Philadelphia Eagles — EAGLES -5.5

Philadelphia at home in a divisional game is usually not something I am excited to lay nearly six points with.

I am doing it anyway.

The Eagles are favored by 5.5 with a total around 44.5.

Washington has Jayden Daniels, so the Commanders always have a path to making games uncomfortable. But Philadelphia is deeper across the roster and should have a major advantage in the trenches.

The thing I want to see from the Eagles is how the offense looks without A.J. Brown, who was traded to New England. DeVonta Smith now has an even larger responsibility in the passing game, and Jalen Hurts is working within another offensive system.

Week 1 could make that transition look clunky.

I still think the Eagles' defense and offensive line provide enough margin to win by a touchdown.

My bet is Eagles -5.5.

Dallas Cowboys at New York Giants — COWBOYS -3

Sunday Night Football.

NFC East.

And one of the teams I stupidly talked myself into picking to win the division.

So I might as well commit.

Dallas is laying around three points on the road against the Giants.

I like what New York is building under John Harbaugh, and Jaxson Dart should continue developing. But I think Dallas is simply better right now.

Dak Prescott has CeeDee Lamb. Dallas upgraded the defense during the offseason. And if the Cowboys are legitimately going to challenge Philadelphia for this division, they cannot start the season by losing to the Giants.

Obviously football does not care about my preseason predictions.

But stylistically, Dallas has enough offensive firepower to create problems for a Giants team I expect to be improved but not ready to contend yet.

My bet is Cowboys -3.

Dallas 27, Giants 21.

The Card

Going into the first full Sunday of the season, the bets I feel best about are Vikings -1.5, Bills -1.5, Buccaneers-Bengals OVER 50.5, Bears-Panthers UNDER 47.5 and Dolphins-Raiders UNDER 40.5.

The ones that scare me the most are Chargers -9.5 because laying that many points is always uncomfortable, and Jets-Titans Under 38.5 because one defensive touchdown can destroy a total that low.

But that is the beauty and stupidity of Week 1.

We have spent the entire offseason reading depth charts, studying schedules, watching preseason snaps and convincing ourselves we know exactly who these teams are.

By about 4 p.m. today, half of it will probably look completely wrong.

Welcome back, NFL Sunday.
