The final Eastern Conference play-in game wasn’t just a win—it was a full-on statement. The Orlando Magic absolutely dismantled the Charlotte Hornets 121-90 to lock up the 8-seed in the 2026 NBA Playoffs, leaving no doubt about who deserved that final spot.  What was expected to be a tight, win-or-go-home battle quickly turned into a one-sided beatdown, with Orlando dominating on both ends from the jump.

From the opening tip, Orlando set the tone with physical defense and efficient offense. Paolo Banchero led the charge with 25 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists, while Franz Wagner and Wendell Carter Jr. provided a balanced attack that never let Charlotte settle in.  The Magic moved the ball, controlled the glass, and most importantly, suffocated the Hornets offensively. Charlotte shot poorly and never found rhythm, falling behind early and never threatening a comeback. By the second half, it was clear—this game was over.

For the Hornets, it’s a brutal end to what was otherwise a promising season. Led by LaMelo Ball and rising star Brandon Miller, Charlotte had clawed its way back into relevance and even won a dramatic play-in game just to get here.  But on the biggest stage, they came up flat. Ball finished with 23 points but struggled with efficiency, and the supporting cast couldn’t keep pace with Orlando’s depth and energy.  Still, this season marks a turning point—after years of irrelevance, the Hornets are finally trending upward. The next step is turning flashes into consistency and learning how to win these high-stakes games.

On the other side, the Magic’s season has been a rollercoaster. They showed flashes of dominance throughout the year, including stretches where they looked like a legitimate top-tier defense, but inconsistency plagued them down the stretch.  Despite that, this young core proved they could rise when it mattered most. Banchero continues to establish himself as a franchise cornerstone, and the supporting cast has bought into a defense-first identity that showed up in a massive way Friday night.

Now, the reward—and the challenge—awaits. As the 8-seed, the Magic will face the top-seeded Detroit Pistons in the first round of the playoffs.  It’s a tough draw, no doubt, but Orlando isn’t going in quietly. If they bring the same defensive intensity and balanced scoring they showed in this play-in game, they could make things interesting and maybe even steal a game or two. At the very least, this is invaluable experience for a young team that feels like it’s just getting started.

This wasn’t just a win—it was a warning. The Magic are here, and they’re not backing down. JK they will get waxed by Detroit.
