Knicks on the Brink: How New York Saves Its Season in Game 4 vs. Atlanta

The New York Knicks are officially in danger territory. Down 2-1 to the Atlanta Hawks and coming off back-to-back gut-punch losses, this isn’t just another playoff game—it’s a season-defining moment. Game 3 was the latest heartbreak, a 109-108 loss decided by a dagger from CJ McCollum in the closing seconds . And let’s not forget Game 2—another one-point collapse where the Knicks completely fell apart in the fourth quarter . Two games, two chances to take control of the series… and two brutal missed opportunities. Now, it’s win or potentially watch the season spiral.

So what needs to change? First and foremost, this team has to figure out how to close. The Knicks have led late in multiple games this series but have completely lost their identity in crunch time. Poor execution, bad shot selection, and defensive breakdowns have cost them dearly . This team built its reputation on toughness and fourth-quarter dominance—but right now, that edge is gone. It needs to come back tonight, or this series is over.

Second, the supporting cast needs to wake up—specifically Mikal Bridges. There’s no way around it: Bridges has been a disaster. Scoreless in Game 3, benched in the second half, and a brutal minus-26 when he was on the floor . That cannot happen again. Not in a must-win game. The Knicks gave up a haul to bring him in for moments exactly like this—and right now, he’s disappearing when they need him most. If Bridges even gives them 15–20 efficient points and competent defense, this series looks completely different.

On the flip side, the stars are doing their job. Jalen Brunson, OG Anunoby, and Karl-Anthony Towns have all shown up. Anunoby dropped 29 in Game 3, and Towns has been dominant on the glass . The Knicks are actually winning the rebounding battle and controlling stretches of these games. The issue isn’t effort—it’s finishing. That’s what separates contenders from teams heading home early.

Defensively, New York has to tighten up on Atlanta’s playmakers. McCollum is cooking them late, and Jalen Johnson has been a problem all series. The Knicks can’t allow comfortable midrange looks in clutch moments again. Force the ball out of McCollum’s hands, rotate better, and live with someone else beating you.

From a betting perspective, this game is razor thin. The Knicks are slight 1.5-point favorites on the road with a total around 214.5 . That tells you everything—you’re basically betting on who handles the moment better. Here are a few plays that stand out:

  • Knicks Moneyline – This is desperation mode. A loss means they likely need to win three straight. Expect urgency.

  • Jalen Brunson Over Points (26+ range) – He’s been the most reliable scorer and will have the ball in every big possession.

  • OG Anunoby Over Points (15–18 range) – He’s been one of the few consistent bright spots offensively.

  • Lean Over 214.5 – The scoring has been creeping up, and tight games late tend to inflate totals

At the end of the day, this game comes down to one thing: heart and execution. The Knicks are not getting blown out—they’re beating themselves. Clean up the turnovers, hit your free throws, and get even a decent performance from Bridges, and they can absolutely steal

Game 4 and reset this series.

But if we see another fourth-quarter collapse? Another disappearing act from Bridges?

Then this “must win” turns into the beginning of the end.
