Steph Curry just went…well…Steph Curry! Steph became the first player in NBA history to score 50 in a game 7 as he torched the Kings on the road.
Steph was screaming “light the beam” and “they can’t finish”, as the Warriors won 120-100.
I said “Steph went Steph” but he wasn’t always THIS guy. He was once the guy who was injury prone dealing with chronicle ankle injuries. He was once the guy who eventually won championships but did not have a finals mvp as he wasn’t quite the killer he is today. All of that changed last year, when he won his first finals mvp as he was simply too much for Boston.
Steph has become not only all-time great but all-time clutch. The chip last year helped validate what most already believed to be true…that he was a living legend. That Wardell was one of the 15 greatest players.
For me Steph is somewhere between 10-12 on the invisible greatest players of all-time list. I’d say 10 if I had to pick. But a championship this year would have him jump a tier. Another championship would put him at 5 total, 2 finals mvps (likely), 2 regular season mvps and titles such as “the greatest shooter of all-time” and “a guy who changed the sport of basketball”.
While another chip won’t leap frog him over the likes of Jordan, Lebron and Kareem…does it make him the greatest point guard of all time?
Well that would be a legit debate. Steph vs Magic. Both changed the sport in their own ways. Steph did it with the three-pointer while Magic did it with showtime and his rivalry with Larry Bird. Many credit them with saving the league!
Magic won 5 championships, 3 finals mvps, 3 regular season mvps. He played in 9 finals from 79’ - 91’. Insane. Almost every season he played in the finals.
If Steph can win another chip and finals mvp. It’s a toss up folks. But as of right now…Magic still holds the crown as best point guard of all time.
My Greatest Point Guard List:
Magic Johnson
Steph Curry
Isiah Thomas
John Stockton
Jason Kidd
