The bright lights of Madison Square Garden somehow got even brighter Tuesday night. Down 22 points in the fourth quarter against the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers, the New York Knicks looked dead in the water in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Then Jalen Brunson happened.

Brunson delivered one of the defining playoff performances in modern Knicks history, exploding for 38 points while orchestrating a stunning fourth-quarter avalanche that completely flipped the series opener. New York closed regulation on a jaw-dropping 44-11 run before finishing off Cleveland 115-104 in overtime to take a 1-0 series lead.

For three quarters, Cleveland looked like the fresher and more composed team. Donovan Mitchell attacked early, the Cavaliers dominated stretches inside, and the Knicks could not buy a three-pointer. Madison Square Garden felt tense, frustrated, and ready for a disappointing opener. Then Brunson shifted into another gear entirely.

Possession after possession, Brunson hunted mismatches, attacked switches, and repeatedly targeted Cleveland’s perimeter defense late in the game. The Cavaliers had no answer once the Knicks increased the tempo and began forcing turnovers. New York’s energy completely overwhelmed Cleveland, turning what looked like a comfortable Cavaliers win into an all-time collapse.

The comeback immediately entered playoff lore. The Garden crowd shook the building as Brunson hit clutch shot after clutch shot, while key contributions from Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, and the Knicks bench helped completely flip momentum. Cleveland suddenly looked exhausted coming off its seven-game war with Detroit, and New York smelled blood.

Now comes the most important game of the series.

Game 2 tonight is where the Eastern Conference Finals could completely swing. If the Knicks defend home court again, Cleveland heads back to Ohio staring at a brutal 0-2 deficit against one of the hottest and toughest teams remaining in the playoffs. The Cavaliers absolutely cannot allow New York to control the pace again late in the game.

For Cleveland to even this series, it starts with composure. The Cavaliers cannot allow Brunson to isolate defenders repeatedly in crunch time. They also need much more offensively from their secondary scorers and must establish Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley inside earlier. Cleveland had success attacking the paint before the fourth-quarter disaster and needs to lean into its size advantage tonight.

The Knicks, meanwhile, know exactly what tonight represents. A 2-0 lead heading to Cleveland would put enormous pressure on the Cavaliers and further cement this New York team as a legitimate Finals threat. Expect Tom Thibodeau’s group to come out with playoff-level intensity from the opening tip instead of waiting until the fourth quarter to wake up.

As for tonight’s betting card, there are several angles that stand out.

Best Bets for Game 2

  • Knicks -5.5

  • Jalen Brunson over 27.5 points

  • Jarrett Allen over points prop

  • Knicks moneyline parlayed with Brunson 30+ points

  • Lean toward the under if the game becomes more physical early

Oddsmakers currently favor New York at home again after the Game 1 collapse, with the Knicks sitting around 5.5-point favorites entering tonight.

Brunson’s scoring prop feels especially tempting after Cleveland showed no consistent answer for him late in Game 1. On the other side, Allen could be a major bounce-back candidate if the Cavaliers commit to feeding the interior more consistently instead of settling for perimeter shots.

The biggest storyline tonight, though, is mental toughness. Can Cleveland recover emotionally from one of the worst playoff collapses in franchise history? Or are the Knicks about to seize complete control of the Eastern Conference Finals in front of another electric Garden crowd?

One game changed the tone of this series entirely. Tonight could define it.
