Starting tomorrow March 10th, at Noon EST, the legal tampering period begins for NFL
teams to start reaching out to free agents. Up until Schefty starts dropping bombs around 4pm on March 12th.
Aaron Rodgers was released in February from the New York Jets after his second season. Year 1 popped his Achilles, Year 2 was good, but not great. Now he has the chance to do the funniest thing ever and complete the Brett Favre career arc. With free agency about to begin, there are a lot of teams that need a QB. The Jets, Giants, Seahawks, Titans, Browns........the Vikings.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said the Vikings are considered a "dark horse" in the Rodgers sweepstakes while The Athletic's Dianna Russini said the Vikings "could show interest" in Rodgers if they are unable to re-sign Daniel Jones.
With Rodgers, he definitely is not the quarterback he once used to be, as showcased by the less than stellar play that got him cut from the Jets in the first place. Yet, for the Vikings, they need to figure out their quarterback position in case JJ McCarthy is not healthy to play coming off his season-ending knee injury.
By bringing in Rodgers, he would provide the veteran leadership on a cost-effective deal that wouldn’t make McCarthy feel as though his future in Minnesota is uncertain. With Rodgers as well, this would give Minnesota leeway to not rush McCarthy back and give him the proper time to heal.
Rodgers landing in Minnesota would complete the trifecta done by Brett Favre more than a decade ago. It was Rodgers who replaced Favre as the Packers' signal caller, starting a late-career journeyman experience.
Favre spent one season with the Jets before finishing his career with the Vikings after a long stay with the Packers. Rodgers may now play for a second NFC North team.
The only difference in their careers was that Favre was drafted and played for the Falcons before making his way to Wisconsin, as opposed to Rodgers, who was drafted by Green Bay.
Rodgers would be throwing to arguably the best WR in the game with Justin Jefferson, who alongside Jordan Addison, and I'm sure would find a way to bring in his best friend Devante Adams.
If the Vikings offense can revitalize Sam Darnolds career, I think a 41 year old Aaron Rodgers would be able to do some damage, or drugs, but at the very least ruin Uncle Tim's Packers.
