I’m old enough to remember when ESPN’s Max Kellerman said, “The 2021 quarterback class could be the best ever”. Now in Max’s defense, it was a segment called “Overreaction Monday”, but still, what a take after one preseason game!
I’m a guy who tries to practice patience and while I don’t think any of the teams who drafted a quarterback in the first round should hit the panic button, they should at least put the button on the table. Don’t press it yet though!
Neither Trevor Lawrence, Zack Wilson, Trey Lance, Justin Fields, Mac Jones have popped and taken that next jump. It’s only been about a season and a half but usually by now at least one guy takes that leap and reassures a team that they’re the future of the franchise.
Now, it may be a little unfair to have Lance on this list since he’s barely played but even in the small sample he didn’t wow you. And if he’s anything like his classmates he’s probably has ways to go.
Lawrence, Wilson, Fields and Jones all have been consistently inconsistent. Bad turnovers and rookie mistakes. None of them have a loaded offense around them (especially Fields) but you’d like to see more from them.
Hopefully these guys turn things around (especially Lance, go Niners!) and hopefully Max Kellerman sticks to boxing.
