If you’re ever unsure about which boxer to pick in a fight, examine their nicknames.
Names like “The Greatest”, “Money” and “Iron” are ones you’d like to lean towards.
If you follow Big Neef’s logic then you wouldn’t have had trouble betting on last night’s bout between Caleb “Sweet Hands” Plant or David “The Mexican Monster” Benavidez.
Say that again? The what? Yes, I’ll take the guy who’s undefeated and goes by the The Mexican Monster.
In all seriousness, last night was one of the biggest fights of the year between these two super middleweights. These two boxers have been talking serious trash for years. And then if you add in some of the antics Benavidez’s father/trainer allegedly did online, a storm was coming.
This was a battle of styles. Plant, the more experienced, technical boxer was strategically clinching and using the big ring to win most of the early rounds. I can’t continue without saying, Plant had some uhhh “help” during the bout…
The jury would like to call referee, Kenny Bayless to the stand. Kenny Bayless might be related to Skip Bayless after what I witness last night. Kenny let Caleb hold all night but spent 99% of his time warning Benavidez for some odd reason. I believe this fight would have ended early if the ref stepped in on Caleb blatant game plan to hold the more powerful puncher, Benavidez.
To David’s credit he took it easy on Kenny following the match. “I don’t want to throw Kenny Bayless under the bus, but he didn’t call Caleb Plant out in any clinches he was doing the whole fight; I think if Kenny Bayless would’ve stopped Caleb from trying to clinch and I would’ve clipped him”.
Eventually, The Mexican Monster fought through all of the holding his opponent was doing. His power, pressure and reach was simply too much. In the final 4 rounds he started doing some serious damage to Plant and I think everyone thought he would knock him out, including Plant’s on corner. Several times Caleb’s trainer pleaded with his fighter to “show me something” or they would throw in the towel.
To Caleb Plant’s credit, he survived. Face blooded but he finished the fight. He has now loss to both Benavidez and Canelo Alvarez. Both boxers a little bit out of his league.
With that said, the multi million dollar question after Benavidez’s unanimous decision last night was, when will Canelo accept his challenge! “It’s not like I’m begging for something…I’ve been mandatory for the past two fights, so it’s something I’ve earned…the only fight that people want to see in super middleweight is me versus Canelo,” said the Mexican Monster.
