The Boston Celtics and star player Jaylen Brown have agreed to the richest contract in NBA history, according to ESPN and The Athletic. The "supermax" deal is worth $304 million over five years, the reports said, and the contract is fully guaranteed.
Jesus H Christ.
I don't understand how pro sports contracts work anymore. The cap in leagues continue to go up, and we see players who are not top 5, 10, 20 players in the league get absurd deals. I have been arguing this point for the last few weeks since the NBA season has ended, but in what world does Jaylen Brown deserve this kind of money. I'm not even mad at him, actually quite the opposite, Brown has secured generational wealth for 5 years of work. This doesn't include any endorsements, or the next contract or two he'll get.
Per @CBS "The deal, at this moment, is the most expensive contract in NBA history. Based on the assumed 10% growth in the salary cap (the maximum allowable within the CBA), it will pay Brown a total of $303,734,891 with an average of $60,746,978.20 per year. Here's how the salaries are expected to break down per year, without including a possible trade kicker:
SEASONSALARY
2024-25: $52,368,085
2025-26: $56,557,531.80
2026-27: $60,746,978.60
2027-28: $64,936,425.40
2028-29: $69,125,872.20
$69 mil a year?!? What in tarnation. People forget, Brown cant dribble to his left. Go rewatch game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Heat.
Brown may have the most expensive contract in NBA history for now, but that status never lasts long. With a new TV deal looming and revenue at an all-time high, the cap is expected to jump 10% annually for the foreseeable future. Max contracts are tied to the cap, with the highest starting salary possible for most players being 35% of the cap. Brown's teammate, Jayson Tatum, will be eligible for a similar contract next offseason that will eclipse this one.
Averaging 26.6 points per game with nearly seven rebounds and 3.5 assists per game, Brown earned Second-Team All-NBA honors, and deservedly so. I think this is a lot of money for one player, especially any player that is Jokic, Giannis, Curry, Luka. But what do I know.
